After considering applications from approximately 90 Garland ISD seniors, the Garland Federation of Clubs (GFC) Scholarship Committee has selected three deserving recipients. Mariah Griggs from Garland High School received $1,500 and Hope Miller from Sachse High School received $1,200. Both scholarships were funded by GFC. The third scholarship, the Marjorie Hall-Chamberlain Memorial Scholarship for $1,000 was awarded to North Garland High School’s Connie Mai by GFC and funded by Altrusa International of Garland.
“GFC was so excited to receive a large number of applications,” Pam Clark, scholarship committee chair, said. “The students were so deserving and I really wish we could have given scholarships to every single one of them.”
Griggs plans to attend Stephen F. Austin State University to earn a degree in Nursing. She hopes to use her nursing skills to become a missionary and help people in other countries. She was a full IB student and ranked 41 in the GHS graduating class of 549.
Miller will attend Texas A&M University to earn a degree in Agriculture Leadership and Education. She was active in the Sachse HS FFA program and sold a prize pig for $4,000, which will go toward college costs. Miller, who works two jobs, ranked 53 in the SHS class of 700.
Mai received the $1,000 scholarship funded by Altrusa. She will attend the University of Texas at Austin and major in Bio Chem – Pre-Med. She is in the top 10% of the NGHS graduating class. Mai is following in the footsteps of her brother who is in a medical residency program.
Ann Macdonald and Barbara Boyden also served on the Garland Federation of Clubs’ Scholarship Committee.
