The city of Garland recognizes the hardships and extreme frustration customers without power face during these historic low temperatures and are ready to deliver power as soon as the electric generators across the state are able to provide it. At this time, ERCOT is unable to predict when grid conditions will stabilize and urges all customers to be prepared for extended outages to continue until the cold weather subsides and more of the generators can resume operating.
ERCOT continues to require GP&L and other utilities in Texas to reduce customer load. The amount we have been required to reduce varies throughout the day from our normal load.
Another winter storm will come through Tuesday, Feb. 16. GP&L and contractor crews remain ready to address any storm-related damages to the electric system so that homes and businesses can receive power as the statewide generating units come online and ERCOT approves an increase in load.
We at GP&L and the city of Garland remain totally committed to delivering power to our citizens as soon as the generation in the state increases. We are working around the clock so that any electricity available through grid improvement can be passed on immediately.

Atmos Energy urges customers to conserve the use of natural gas as well, due to unprecedented demand. Atmos reminds customers to call immediately if they suspect a gas leak.
Garland Water Utilities
Due to the extreme weather conditions, we are experiencing high call volumes due to water issues throughout the city. At this time, our system is keeping up with demand, but ongoing changing weather conditions could impact the system. If you do not have water service at your home, more than likely the water in your pipes has frozen. Please call our Water Dispatch Center at 972-205-3210 and we will send a crew to identify the issue as soon as possible. If your water is still flowing, be sure to drip faucets and open faucet cabinets to allow warm air to reach the pipes.
Warming Centers
The city of Garland has opened two warming centers for Garland residents age 65+ and families with young children. The warming centers are at Holford and Gale Fields Recreation Centers. Check GarlandTX.gov for more details.
Other City Services
Due to continuing power supply constraints and extreme winter weather conditions, all non-emergency city of Garland facilities will continue to be closed Wednesday, Feb. 17. Some departments will provide services by phone or online but may be limited.
All residential and commercial trash/recycling/bulky collections are suspended and the Hinton Landfill will be closed Wednesday, Feb. 17. We are assessing the rest of the week and will post updates to social media and the website.
This week’s meetings of the Garland City Council have been postponed to next week.
Emergency services such as fire, police and emergency medical operations will continue to operate around the clock. Other critical public works teams will respond to critical needs.
