Spring Creek Forest Preserve – July-August

Jul. 4, 2021

The Spring Creek Forest Preservation Society has announced its schedule of activities for July and August. Make plans now to join in the activities! Please check out the website for more information.

Thanks to Jon Reph

Jon Reph, from Troop 1978 of Garland, planned and then oversaw an Eagle Project sponsored by society executive committee member Rob Kaaa. Jon rolled four activities into his project to improve preserve. He built birdhouses, added to a stone pathway, created a water break and picked up trash.

His team added three bluebird houses to the southwest end of the preserve to help attract Eastern bluebirds to the area. He supervised the addition of 17 paver stones to a section of the path which regularly gets muddy and washed out by rain runoff. He created a water break just south of the stone path that will slow down the water flow across the path during the rain.

Jon organized and supervised a team of 30 volunteers including an Eagle Scout from Midlothian, North Garland High School students and several people from Troop 1978 of Garland.

  • All minors 16 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.
  • For Master Naturalists, this may count as volunteer hours on Preservation Society for Spring Creek Forest project.

Saturday, July 17 – An Evening with Moths – Bring the whole family – 8:30 p.m. – 1770 Holford Road

Special guest – Sam Kieschnick, Urban Wildlife Biologist from Texas Parks and Wildlife. This event is coordinated with National Moth Week which celebrates the beauty, life cycles and habitats of moths. Most moths are nocturnal, so we will have light sheets to attract moths. Volunteers will be on hand to answer questions and help with identification. Bring magnifying glass if you have one. So put on your insect repellent, and bring a magnifying glass if you have one because many of these beautiful moths are very small. Come be a “Moth-er” with us!
