There aren’t enough complimentary adjectives to describe Garland Summer Musicals’ production of “Grease.” The book, music and lyrics are by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey.
In addition to “Grease” being just plain fun, the actors’ performances were superb. All of them had wonderful voices and dancing skills.
All the memorable songs were in the stage production and audience members couldn’t resist moving with the music during tunes such as “Greased Lightning,” “We Go Together” “Summer Nights and, of course, .“You’re the One That I Want,”
“Beauty School Dropout” with Allie Donnelly as Frenchy and Brandon Baker as the Teen Angel couldn’t have been more fun!
The sets, designed by Kelly Cox, were impressive. In addition, Kelly McCain’s choreography was impressive. The costumes by Michael A. Robinson and Dallas Costume Shoppe were spot on.
Robert Mata and Courtney Blanc played Danny and Sandy. Cameron Vance and Alena Cardenez portrayed Kenickie and Rizzo. The production was directed by J. Alan Hanna and produced by Patty Granville.
GSM’s productions are always huge hits! So make plans now to see “9 to 5: The Musical.” Show dates are July 16-18 and July 23-25. Friday and Saturday shows are at 8 p.m. Sunday matinees are at 2:30. Shows are at the Granville Arts Center, 300 North Fifth Street in downtown Garland.
The production is based on the film and music and lyrics are by Dolly Parton.

In 1982, the Performing Arts Center Guild was formed to provide volunteer support for the city of Garland’s Performing Arts Center. The PAC Guild volunteers supported various arts groups with thousands of volunteer hours, selling concessions and publishing the “Arts in Action” Newsletter and TV show. One major goal of the PAC Guild was to bring professional musicals to Garland. Therefore, in 1983 the PAC Guild created the Garland Summer Musicals. From its inception, GSM’s mission was to provide a training ground for aspiring performers with the focus on maintaining a professional and educational environment that taught area youth all areas of theater production. The Garland Summer Musicals quickly became a major theatrical event for the Dallas area.
