Tax-free weekend shopping Aug. 6-8

Aug. 3, 2021

Families and educators are invited to take advantage of back-to-school savings at Firewheel Town Center during the upcoming tax-free weekend. A variety of clothing, footwear and technology retailers will offer everything necessary for a return to the classroom.

Shoppers can purchase necessities without paying sales tax on qualifying items in accordance with the Texas sales tax holiday. The three-day sales tax break begins Friday, Aug. 6, and ends Sunday, Aug. 8. During this period, retailers will not be required to collect state and local sales use tax on most footwear, clothing, backpacks and school supplies priced less than $100.

In addition to the tax savings, retailers will also be featuring special discounts and in-store events. Click here for a complete list of deals and events.

Firewheel Town Center is located at 245 Cedar Sage Drive in Garland. For more information including hours, click here or Firewheel Town Center’s FacebookTwitter or Instagram.

Be sure to make the most out of tax-free shopping for back-to-school season by purchasing items in the tax-exempt categories.

Items that are still taxable include:

  • Specialized clothing used for sports.
  • Accessories, which include headbands and jewelry.
  • Watch bands and watches.

Texas shoppers will save approximately $8 for each $100 spent.

The State of Texas has offered this tax holiday weekend for back-to-school shoppers since 1999. Millions of dollars have been saved by Texas shoppers in state and local sales taxes each year.

A press release from the Texas Comptroller’s office also covered online and telephone purchases:

During the annual sales tax holiday, qualifying items can be purchased tax-free online or by telephone, mail, custom order or any other means (including in-store purchases) when either:

  • the item is both delivered to and paid for by, the customer during the exemption period; or
  • the customer orders and pays for the item, and the seller accepts the order during the exemption period for immediate shipment, even if delivery is made after the exemption period ends.
