The Spring Creek Forest Preserve has announced its schedule of activities for March. Here’s what’s happening at the preserve!

Speaker Series
Tuesday, March 1 – 7 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. – Fossils of Spring Creek – Location: Zoom meeting
Guest Speaker – Dr. Ignacio Pujana, Palientologist
Dr. Pujana, Associate Professor of Geology, Paleontology and more at UTD will speak on fossils of Spring Creek and the north Texas region. He has extensive experience teaching geosciences and has written articles for many scientific journals. However, his main interest is stratigraphy, biostratigraphy, and micropaleontology as working tools. He is currently working in Mesozoic microfossils, particularly Radiolaria. (Note from newsletter creator Barbara Baynham: “I just wanted to put that in. I have no idea what it means, but I hope Dr. Pujana will work in an explanation during his presentation.”
Monthly Work Session
Saturday, March 5 – 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. – 1770 Holford
Participants will break into teams and each will have a knowledgeable volunteer. Tasks could include clearing trails, taking out invasive plants, etc. For last-minute information, especially if the weather is questionable, check our website or Facebook page.
- Bring water.
- Even in the heat, wear heavy work gloves, long pants, protective eyewear and sturdy shoes (no sandals) for protection from poison ivy and thorns.
- If you have them, bring loppers and/or small tree saws.
- All participants and the parents of minors must sign our liability waiver.
- All minors 16 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.
- For master naturalists, this may count as volunteer hours on the Preservation Society for Spring Creek Forest project.

4th Sunday Nature Walk – Dr. Ignacio Pujana leads search for fossils
Sunday, March 27 – 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. – 1770 Holford
Our region of Texas was covered by a shallow sea umpteen-plus years ago. Dr. Pujana can not only quantify the geologic timeline, but he also hopes to find fossils of creatures that lived here eons ago.

The 2022 City Nature Challenge – Use the app iNaturalist, record your observations and be part of an international citizen-science experience.
Dates: April 29 through May 2
All are encouraged to participate in this international celebration of nature in and around urban areas. It is a four-day event April 29 – May 2nd utilizing iNaturalist.org to record and analyze observations from all over the world. Visit one of Garland’s nature parks during the weekend to participate, have fun and learn about the flora and fauna. We hope the park you visit is Spring Creek Forest Preserve. Go to springcreekforest.org for more information including a map of trails throughout the preserve. Visit iNaturalist.org in advance to download the app so you can officially report your observations. You must the 13 or older to have an account.
