Garland Quilt Guild purpose
The stated purpose of the Garland Quilt Guild, according to our bylaws, is “exclusively for charitable, religious, educational and scientific purposes, including, for such purposes, the making of distributions to organizations that qualify as exempt organizations under section 501 ( c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, or corresponding section of any future federal tax code.”
The Guild also exists to bring together people who share a common love of quilting and to enable them to participate in community service projects which benefit those in need, while preserving a rich heritage and exploring new expressions of the art of quilting through education.

Garland Quilt Guild history
The Garland Quilt Guild was formed in 2005. With Barbara Daniel Cissne as our leader, the first meeting was held at Suzy’s Quilt Shop in downtown Garland. The plan was that the meeting would be held there until the group outgrew the space. There were 78 in attendance at that first meeting (with ladies sitting on the stairs and peeking through the window trying to hear what was happening) – needless to say, a new facility had to be found immediately. The Guild met from April – June 2005 in the First Christian Church in downtown Garland. In July 2005, First Presbyterian Church in downtown Garland was willing to accommodate our growing group. The Garland Quilt Guild started with 108 charter members and the first year ended with an impressive 136 members. Our membership has maintained at just over a hundred members through the years.
We were granted nonprofit tax-exempt status as a 501 (c)(3) organization in 2009. We raffled our first quilt in 2010. Our meetings are geared to inspiring members to learn new techniques, appreciate the history of quilt making, and to make quilts for charitable organizations. The by-products are interesting and varied meetings, lots of opportunities for members to get together and share their mutual interests, and many outlets for quilt making. Friendliness, helpfulness, and sharing are the strong points of this group.
Membership
Regular membership is open to anyone 18 years or older, and a junior membership is available to anyone between the ages of 12 and 17.
Membership dues are from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31 of each year. The annual membership fee is $25.00. Anyone without a current membership card or guest pass will be required to pay a $5.00 guest fee at speaker meetings. New and renewing members will receive a guest pass when they receive their current membership card.
