The 4th of July holiday is a holiday when both are common, even though both are extremely dangerous. No matter how the number of injuries increases every year, people continue to participate in these activities.
Fireworks
In the U.S., at least 18 people died from fireworks-related incidents in 2020. In comparison, 12 injuries were reported in 2019. Additionally, about 15,600 people were treated in ERs for fireworks injuries in 2020. In 2019, there were approximately 10,000 ER-treated fireworks injuries.
Celebratory gunfire
Celebratory gunfire is also a threat. The Garland Police Department works diligently to educate the community about the dangers of firing guns into the air. Most people understand that it is an inappropriate way to celebrate. Additionally, most people understand that it should NOT be done. However, there are always those few people who do it anyway.
In addition to being incredibly dangerous, celebratory gunfire is against the law. Bullets that are fired into the air can travel as high as 10,000 feet. Also, the wind can take them in unpredictable directions. Celebratory gunfire can have deadly consequences.
A person caught firing a gun into the air can be charged with a misdemeanor, fined up to $4,000 and be sentenced to a year in jail. Additionally, if the bullet harms anyone, the person who fired the gun could face more serious charges and will go to jail.
Please help the Garland Police Department by reporting fireworks and gunfire.
Remember, what goes up must come down and the results can be deadly.
