It’s important to know how where your water meter is and how to turn off the water supply from the city to your home. When you move into a new home, one of the first things you should do is locate the meter and ensure that you know how to turn off the water supply.
Turn the water off at the meter to protect your home from severe damage to walls, floors, furniture, etc. during any water-related emergency.
Examples of when to turn off the water supply to your home include: when you have leaky or frozen pipes; when water heater is leaking; when sewer line is backed up; and when renovations are being done. Also turn off the water supply when you plan to be away for extended periods of time.
