The Spring Creek Forest Preserve has announced its schedule for April and May. Check out the schedule and join in on some outdoor fun.
Monthly Work Session – Saturday, April 9, 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. – 1770 Holford Road
Participants will break into teams. Each team will have a knowledgeable volunteer. You could be clearing trails, taking out invasive plants, opening up the prairies, even picking up trash. For last-minute information, especially if the weather is questionable, check our website or Facebook page for updates.
- Each work session begins with a safety briefing.
- Bring water.
- Even in the heat, wear heavy work gloves, long pants, protective eyewear and sturdy shoes (no sandals) for your protection from poison ivy and thorns.
- If you have them, bring loppers and/or small tree saws.
- All participants and the parents of minors must sign our Liability Waiver.
- All minors 16 yrs. and younger must be accompanied by an adult.
- For Master Naturalists, this may count as Volunteer Hours on the Preservation Society for Spring Creek Forest project.
4th Sunday Nature Walk – Matt Grubisich – Trees of Spring Creek Preserve – Sunday, April 24, 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. – 1770 Holford Road
Garland Parks Director, Matt Grubisich will show us the diversity of trees that our preserve supports, from massive Chinkapin oaks to Toothache trees and American Beautyberry. In the time that he has been the parks director, he has shown he understands the special requirements of the preserve.
Challenge Weekend – All are encouraged to participate in this international celebration of nature in urban areas. It’s a four-day event – April 29 – May 2 utilizing the phone app iNaturalist.org to record and analyze observations from all over the world. Visit the preserve during the weekend to participate.
Four guided walks – as part of Challenge WeekendSpring Migration Bird Walks with Reba Collins, Master Birder – Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1, 8 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. – 1787 Holford Road
See what birds are in Spring Creek Forest in late spring. Reservations required, attendance limited to 10. Contact Reba at rcollins20@verizon.net to reserve a spot – specify Saturday or Sunday. Bring binoculars.
Frogs at Night with Jessica Crowley – Saturday April 30, 6:30 p.m. – Halff Park on Ranger Drive.
Come for an evening hike to listen and look for frogs along Spring Creek, one of the cleanest creeks in the metroplex. Crowley will also bring some frogs from her collection. Will be on dirt trails, so long pants and sturdy, close-toe shoes are recommended.
May 2022 Events
Insect Walk with Judy Aschner, Entomology Specialist – Sunday, May 1, 1 p.m. – 1787 Holford Road
This walk will concentrate on insects. The preserve will be transitioning from spring to summer. Insects in various life stages will be present as the spring species are winding down and the summer species are ramping up. Long pants and sturdy, close-toe shoes are recommended
Monthly Speaker Series – Jeremy Jordan – Tuesday, May 3, 7 p.m. – 8 p.m. Zoom meeting.
Jeremy Jordan, working on his Master of Wildlife Science degree at Texas A&M, recently conducted a fish survey within the preserve borders. He will discuss the results.

Clark, known throughout the region for her knowledge of our native plants, will take us on a walk through the prairie to point out some of our gems.
