City Council, GISD Trustee election results; Council District 5 requires runoff

May. 9, 2022

The District 5 City Council race will require a runoff. Margaret Lucht received 347 votes. Jon Dehn received 218 votes and Cle D. Kimble received 132 votes.

A candidate must receive 50% plus one vote to be declared the winner. To prove how every vote counts, Lucht was only two votes short of that requirement. Consequently, a runoff is required. The runoff election will be June 18. In 2021, a required City Council runoff election cost the city approximately $46,000.

In the District 2 Garland City Council race, incumbent Deborah Morris won with 386 votes. Koni Ramos-Kaiwi received 103 votes. Trayc Claybrook received 64 votes.

In the Place 1 Garland ISD Board of Trustees race, Larry Glick won with 5,523 votes. Bob Duckworth received 3,724.

Incumbent Johnny Beach ran unopposed in Place 2 and Linda Griffin ran unopposed in the Place 3 seat.

There was good news for homeowners statewide with the passing of two propositions.

Proposition 1 cut school district property taxes for homeowners who are disabled or 65 and older. The proposition was approved overwhelmingly with 1,143,659 votes for and 172,635 votes against.

Proposition 2, which was also approved by a large margin, raises the state’s homestead exemption from $25,000 to $40,000. 1,130,225 voted in favor of Proposition 2 and 203,209 voted against.
