Library system announces July activities

Garland’s Nicholson Memorial Library System has announced an extensive list of activities and events for July.

Adult book club – Adults can join the book club at the South Garland Branch Library. The next meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Book to be discussed is The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah. 972-205-3931.

Monthly STEAM Labs – Children ages 6-12 and their families can participate in monthly STEAM Labs at Garland’s Central Library. The next lab is Wednesday, July 20, 2:30 p.m. Attendees may take home any project completed at the events. July’s theme is space. Registration not required. 972-205-2517.

GSO enhances STEAM Learning – Preschoolers 3-5 get a taste of STEAM learning as members of the Garland Symphony Orchestra visit the libraries. Children will learn about music as GSO members teach them about musical instruments and demonstrate how they’re played. Schedule below:

GSO representatives will make an appearance at the North Garland Branch Family Storytime at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 13. Libraries also host STEAM-related programming for school-aged children and offer STEAM educational technology for ages 2-12. 972-205-2517.

Little Art Explorers Paint with Watercolor Ice Cubes – Children ages 0-5 can participate in an art series at the South Garland Branch The next event is at 4 p.m. Saturday, July 9. Little Art Explorers supports early child development by integrating activities that build motor skills, increase vocabulary, improve symbol recognition and encourage emotional awareness. 972-205-3933.

Middle Graders Build Water Bottle Submarines – Children in grades 4-8 explore STEAM concepts while completing fun, hands-on learning activities at the Walnut Creek Branch Saturday, July 23, at 2:30 p.m. Participants will build a water bottle submarine and explore the scientific concepts of buoyancy, air pressure and density. Celebrate Shark Week – Families celebrate Shark Week at North Garland Branch July 5-9. Shark Week consists of shark-related activities. Event is Wednesday, July 6, 10:30 a.m. 972-205-2804

Monthly STEAM Lab – The North Garland Branch is hosting monthly STEAM Labs for families in June nd July. Each lab will consist of a STEAM-based project that integrates science and engineering concepts. The next lab is Saturday, July 16, at 11 a.m. Participants will learn about magnetism and circuitry and turn a grapple claw into an electromagnet that picks up soup cans and paperclips. Romancing the Book Club – Adults ages 18+ are invited to join a new romance book club at the South Garland Branch. The next meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 7. Library staff and attendees will discuss Accidentally Engaged by Farah Heron. Registration not required.

David Slick Makes Magic at Garland’s Senior Social Hour – David Slick, a world-class juggler and magician, performs at Senior Social Hours at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 21, at the Central Library. Slick holds two Guinness World Records for juggling, and his routines often include the juggling of machetes, knives, eggs, beanbags, rings, and even a real bowling ball. Senior Social Hour programs are free. Registration not required. Seats fill up quickly. Doors open 30 minutes before performance. Donations of gently-used books and media for the Friends of the Library book sale will be accepted.

Teens Hang Out After Hours – Teens 13-17 can hang out at the South Garland Branch after closing. Teen After Hours is Saturday, July 16, 6:30 to 8 p.m. Each event will consist of a group activity, and snacks will be provided. At the July event, teens will break into teams to play “Are You Smarter than a Librarian” and test their trivia knowledge. Registration required. 972-205-3934

Special Programs for Children – “Oceans of Possibilities,” the Nicholson Memorial Library System presents special free programs for children.

Brett Roberts’ Professor Pop Bubble Show – Brett Roberts will present an interactive show full of bubbles, including giant bubbles, bubbles inside bubbles and bubbles on top of bubbles, then teach the kids how to touch a bubble without popping it.

Families Explore Literacy Under the Sea – Families discover ocean-themed books and activities at the Under the Sea Family Literacy Party at Walnut Creek Branch Saturday, July 16, at 2:30 p.m. Attendees will listen to a story about oceans and sing songs before completing ocean-elated activities, playing I Spy a Fish and a shark-themed memory game and going on a treasure hunt.
