A recent article posted at https://sixerswire.usatoday.com/ and written by Ky Carlin, sang the praises of Tyrese Maxey, 2019 graduate of South Garland High School. Maxey led his SGHS basketball team to two state championship tournaments. After graduating from SGHS, Maxey attended Kentucky University for a year. He set a school record when he scored 26 points in his collegiate debut. Maxey joined the NBA draft in 2020 and went to the Philadelphia 76ers as the 21st overall pick.
Maxey averaged 17.5 points and 4.3 assists in his second season with the 76ers. He posted those numbers while shooting 42.7% from deep.
Carlin called Maxey a “rising star who has been impressive as ever in his first two seasons.”
After the all-star break, Maxey was moved to shooting guard where he averaged 18.7 points in 24 games. At that point, he was shooting 48% from deep and 52.3% from the floor.
Carlin wrote that HoopsHype put together their ranking of the top 25 shooting guards in the NBA and Maxey came in ranked ninth:
“The fact that in his age-21 campaign, Maxey was able to elevate his game from the regular season to the tune of 20.8 points and 3.9 assists over 12 games on 48.4% shooting (37.7% from deep) is extremely promising with regards to his future and speaks to his confidence as a player. An underrated passer, we expect big things from Maxey in 2022-23, hence, him cracking our list at No. 9.”
In an article written just a week later, Carlin, wrote about a TikTok interview with “The Hoop Genius” in which Maxey described his workouts.
He rises at 5 a.m. and has finished three workouts before 11 a.m.
Carlin said that considering Maxey’s work ethic, he’ll be an even better player in his third season. Carlin added that Maxey could even play in the 2023 all-star game.
