The Cub Scouts of Pack 1978 enjoy some great activities throughout the year. They go on family campouts, have the traditional Pinewood Derby Race and attend a Christmas party. Additionally, the Cub Scouts participate in outings such as visiting local fire stations and going to museums.
Pack 1978, in its 27 years, has also collected numerous community service hours. They host food drives that benefit Good Samaritans of Garland, clean up parks and creeks and collect Toys for Tots donations. In addition, the pack participates in the Wreaths Across America event during which they help place wreaths on the gravestones of fallen service men and women.
The pack is sponsored by First United Methodist Church in downtown Garland. It is comprised of six dens which include boys and girls from kindergartners to fifth grade. The den meetings are held at the church two or three times per month. The pack meets on the third Monday of each month.
The pack’s funds come from the annual membership fees paid by the participants. However, unexpected expenses sometimes arise. That causes a financial hardship for the pack. This year, the pack’s Pinewood Derby track is damaged and the camping equipment could use an upgrade or replacement.
In addition, the organization’s hope is that money is never the reason that a child is unable to join Cub Scouts. To help with this issue, they are working on establishing a scholarship fund to help families pay the necessary expenses. Those costs include fees, uniforms and additional essentials.
Also important to note is that Pack 1978 is run strictly by volunteers. Scout leaders and parents spend countless hours supporting the efforts of these children. Hector Escobedo, the Pack 1978 Cub Master, has also spent numerous volunteers hours working with the pack.
The pack hosted a carnival/fundraiser Saturday, Sept. 17. However, with the additional events on that day, numbering at least 10, the carnival was overshadowed and did not have good attendance.
