Library announces November schedule

The Nicholson Memorial Library System has announced its November activity schedule.

Book club at South Garland Branch – Adults ages 18 and older are invited to join the Garland Library’s book club at the South Garland Branch at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 17. Library staff and attendees will discuss The Leavers by Lisa Ko. Registration not required. 972-205-3931.

Adults watch air fryer demo – Adults 18+ learn to make easy snacks perfect for holiday get-togethers at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12 at the South Garland Branch. Attendees watch as staff demonstrate how to make snack foods using an air fryer. Staff will offer tips and tricks. Samples of food made with the fryer will be available. Children celebrate Native American Heritage Month – Children 6-11 can celebrate Native American Heritage Month at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12 at the Central Library. Attendees will listen to the story We Are Water Protectors by Carole Lindstrom and Michaela Goade. Registration required and limited to 15 participants. Families celebrate International Games Month – Family-friendly games at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3 at the Central Library. Free. Trouble®, Scrabble®, Guess Who® and Candy Land®.

Families make ornaments – Families can drop in at the Central Library to make holiday ornaments for themselves and for the library tree. A maker space area will be set up according to the following schedule. Supplies and instructions will be provided. Registration not required. 972-205-2533.

Preschool Book Club – Families with children 3-5 can join The Bookworm Book Club at the South Garland Branch. The next meeting is at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15. Families are encouraged to read a picture book or an age-appropriate non-fiction book matching the theme and bring it to the meeting to share. Library staff will read another book aloud before book sharing and extension activities begin.

Little Art Explorers make tape art – Ages up to 5 participate in an art series designed for their age group at the South Garland Branch. Next event is at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5. Program supports early child development through activities that build motor skills, increase vocabulary, improve symbol recognition and encourage emotional awareness. Middle graders create string art – 4th – 8th graders explore STEAM concepts while completing fun, learning activities at the Walnut Creek Branch. Event Saturday, Nov. 26 at 2:30 p.m. Attendees will create string art using colored threads arranged between points into a geometric pattern. Mystery book club meets – Adults 18+ may join new mystery book club at the Central Library. The next meeting is at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12. Library staff and attendees will discuss Winter Counts by David Heska Wanbli Weiden and enjoy light refreshments. No registration required. 972-205-2533.

Adults celebrate National Novel Writing Month – Aspiring novelists 18+ can attend two writing workshops at the Central Library. The first, How to Write, is Monday, Nov. 7 at 6:30 p.m. This workshop will focus on the basics of creative writing, including getting started, plotting and general writing tips. The second, Monday, Nov. 21 at 6:30 p.m., will explore character development.  Registration required, begins two weeks before events – 972-205-2533.

Adults make origami lanterns – Adults create origami lanterns at the North Garland Branch Thursday, Nov. 10, at 5 p.m. Supplies are provided. Registration is required and limited to 15 participants. To register, call 972-205-203 beginning Oct. 27.

Celebrate Dinovember – Families can celebrate their love for dinosaurs during Dinovember at the North Garland Branch. Dinovember consists of dinosaur-related events and activities, such as a scavenger hunt, dinosaur origami and dinosaur-themed story times at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 16 at Family Storytime and at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 18 at Toddler Storytime. Children can also attend a T-Rex tea party Saturday, Nov. 12 at 10:30 a.m. Attendees 3-7 will learn tea party etiquette from a T-Rex, play dinosaur-themed games, make crafts and enjoy refreshments. 972-205-2804.

Monthly STEAM Lab – North Garland Branch hosts STEAM Labs for families. Each consists of a STEAM-based project that integrates science and engineering concepts. Next lab is Saturday, Nov. 19 at 10 a.m. Participants will assemble a 3-D dinosaur puzzle. Supplies provided. Registration required, limited to 15. Adults create art – Adults 18+ create art in the style of Pablo Picasso at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5 at the Central Library. Attendees learn about Picasso’s career then create a masterpiece. Romancing the Book Club – Adults 18+ can join a new romance book club at the South Garland Branch. Next meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3. Attendees will discuss To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han. Registration not required

Senior citizens play card games – Ages 55+ play cards, dominos and board games. 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, at South Garland Branch. Event is free. Registration not required. 972-205-3931.

Teens Hang Out After Hours – Ages 13-17 hang out at South Garland Branch Saturday, Nov. 19, 6:30 – 8 p.m. Teens follow clues to solve a mystery. Registration begins Nov. 5. 972-205-3934.

Teens enjoy role-playing games – Teens 12-17 play tabletop role-playing games at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9. Event features single-session tabletop role-playing games that encourage critical thinking and teamwork. Registration required, limited to 20. Call 972-205-2517 beginning Oct. 26.

Teens form Advisory Board – Teens 13-17 can join Teen Advisory Board. The next meeting is 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. Nov. 10 at the Central Library. Teens will discuss how library can better serve their age group. 972-205-2517.

Teens learn art hacks – Ages 10-17 learn art hacks and create art at the Central Library’s Art Hackers event Saturday, Nov. 19 at 2:30 p.m. Participants learn art hacks as well as the science or ideology behind them. They will then try out the art hacks while making artwork. Attendees will make an acid and base cloth tapestry. Registration required and begins Saturday, Nov. 5. 972-205-2517.

Teens host book club – Teens 12-17 can join Novel Ideas, a book club designed for their age group at Garland’s Central Library. Novel Ideas meets monthly to discuss books the members have recently read. There is no assigned book. The meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17. 972-205-2517.

Teens complete silent challenges – Ages 13-17 participate in STEAM challenges at 6 p.m. Nov. 16 at the Central Library. Teens will be presented with challenges like making ice cream with set ingredients and building structures with limited supplies. Registration begins Nov. 2. 972-205-2517.

Donate knitted or crocheted rectangles – Knitters ages 12+- Knit or crochet 7X9 inch rectangles. Libraries will donate them to Warm Up America, a non-profit that coordinates volunteers to knit and crochet items for people in need. Rectangles are stitched together and given out to people in need. Turn in rectangles to any library branch by Saturday, Nov. 19.
