Garland Civic Theatre’s next production, Sleuth, was written in 1970 by Anthony Shaffer. The playwright said the play was partially inspired by his friend, composer Stephen Sondheim, because of his intense interest in game-playing and by mystery writer John Dickson Carr whose stories featured complex plots.
While on Broadway, the show received the Tony for Best Play and two of the actors received Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Performance. It premiered on Broadway at the Music Box Theater Nov. 12, 1970 and ran for over 1,200 performances. Additionally, Sleuth was adapted into three feature films in 1972, 2007 and 2014.
In Sleuth, which will be directed by Aimee Thibodeaux, Andrew Wyke lures his wife’s lover, Milo Tindle, to his country house. Andrew convinces Milo to stage a robbery of her jewelry. Andrew knows that his wife, Marguerite, has expensive tastes. She will never leave him because she needs someone who can afford to maintain her lavish lifestyle. Knowing that Milo cannot afford Marguerite, Andrew offers Milo an opportunity to benefit from a fraudulent insurance scam.
