The theme of this year’s event is “Recognizing African American health care professionals.”
The Honorable Annie Dickson, former Garland City Council Member and current vice president of the NAACP Garland Unit is happy that this year’s Winter Ball will honor health care professionals.
“The health care honorees deserve our recognition,” Dickson said. “We cannot go through life without them from the time we are born until we close our eyes for the last time.”
Dickson added that a few years ago, she was in the hospital for an extended period. The nurses were excellent, and they understood the pain she was feeling. The illness was caused by an allergic reaction to a medication and was life-threatening.
“Had it not been for the nurses and doctors, I would not be here today,” Dickson said.
She still suffers residual effects and has spent a lot of time going to doctors’ office visits and in the hospital to be treated for those lingering issues. Dickson continues to be very grateful for and impressed by the care she receives. She added that her gratitude extends not only to the doctors and nurses, but to everyone who works in the health care industry.

About Garland NAACP
The Garland Unit of the NAACP was chartered July 6, 1984, with 127 members. Ms. Goldie Locke served as founding president and Mr. Johnnie O. Steadham was first vice president, along with 18 Executive Committee members. Two of the original 18 board members are still active – Mr. Chester Johnson currently serves as chair of Legal Redress and Ms. Carol Montgomery is active on two committees. Mr. Richard Dockery, NAACP regional director, chaired the standing-room-only organizational meeting where two key issues were addressed: 1). the firing of African American police officer Sam Allen; 2). substandard schools in the minority area of Garland. Mr. Sam Allen was later rehired as a Garland firefighter. To address schools, the Garland Unit became a plaintiff to the original school desegregation court order filed by the United States Justice Department and the Texas Education Agency. This judgment remains in effect.
