Spring Creek Forest Preservation Society March schedule

Feb. 18, 2023

The Spring Creek Forest Preservation Society has several interesting programs planned for March. Make plans now to join them for the events below.

Speaker Series

Jeff Sargent – Bringing Back Texas Prairies – Tuesday, March 7 – 7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. – Zoom

There is a great example of Texas prairie at the preserve. However, Texas prairies are disappearing due to development using concrete or due to agriculture which creates monocultures rather than native plant diversity. Sargent is the development director at the Native Prairies Association of Texas (NPAT) and works to advance their mission to conserve and restore native prairies and educate the public about their beauty and benefits. He expanded his knowledge of the natural world as an Oregon Master Naturalist and complemented that by completing the Texas Master Naturalist program in 2021.

2nd Saturday Monthly Work Session

Saturday, March 11 – 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. – 1787 Holford Road

Attendees break into teams, each with a knowledgeable volunteer. You could be clearing trails, taking invasive plants out, opening up the prairies, picking up trash. If the weather is questionable, check website or Facebook for updates.

  • Bring water and bug repellant.
  • Close-toed shoes are mandatory. Heavy work gloves, long pants and protective eyewear are recommended.
  • If you have loppers and/or small tree saws, bring them – no power tools.
  • All participants and the parents of minors must sign a Liability Waiver.
  • Youth under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. No drop off/pick up for those under 18.
  • Master naturalists – this may count as volunteer hours on the Preservation Society for Spring Creek Forest project.
4th Sunday Nature Walk

Bob Richie will point out edible plants at Spring Creek Forest Preserve – Sunday, March 26 – 2 p.m.  3:30 p.m. – 1770 Holford Road

Bob Richie has an amazing knowledge about the natural environment as well as a wide variety of interests, particularly those involving foraging, native plants, bees and chickens. Richie is a Dallas native who raises bees, chickens, rabbits, cats and dogs. An amateur naturalist, he has spent much of his life outdoors. He works for a Dallas architectural firm.  He’s a certified Texas Master Naturalist and past president of The Trinity Valley Beekeepers Association.

Special July event – Mark your calendars

An Evening with Moths – July 22 – 8:30 p.m. – 1770 Holford Road

Sam Kieschnick, urban wildlife biologist for DFW Texas Parks and Wildlife, will set up light-stations to entice nighttime insects and more to rest for a while on the lighted sheets. Children love this unusual event where they can view insects up close. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
