Altrusa awards scholarships

Jun. 11, 2023

Congratulations to Lizbeth Vasquez and Leena Van, the two recipients of this year’s Marjorie Hall-Chamberlain Memorial Scholarship.  Altrusa International of Garland awards two $1000 scholarships each year to deserving Garland ISD students. They are thrilled to be able to assist deserving students as they pursue higher education.

Leena Van graduated in the top 7% of the senior class at North Garland High School. She will attend the University of Southern California in the fall. Her plans include a double major in Computer Science and Business Administration. In her essay, Leena shared that her degree will provide an opportunity to impact inclusivity in modern technology.

“I aim to break down walls of the digital divide with an emphasis on underrepresented communities by creating accessible software applications and digital media,” she said.altrusa

Graduating in the top 8% of her class at Lakeview Centennial High School, Lizbeth Vasquez will attend Southern Methodist University. She will pursue pre-med. In addition to her high school diploma, Lizbeth has earned medical certifications at the Gilbreath-Reed Center. She has also earned an Associates of Science from Dallas College (Eastfield campus).

Choosing the medical field is deeply tied to her family and experiences they have had with doctors.

“I want to make a difference in the [medical] field ensuring that patients will get the correct diagnosis without breaking them,” Lizbeth said

Congratulations and good luck to these two well-deserving young women.

About Altrusa Garland:

It all began in 2002 when a few dynamic women of Garland decided to form an Altrusa club to serve the communities of Garland, Rowlett and Sachse. To this day, Altrusa Garland has remained dedicated to improving our community in a variety of ways. While our primary focus remains on literary, we also undertake a variety of other projects from boxes to the military, support of local food banks, serving our un-housed neighbors, supporting women’s shelters, senior citizens, and more.
