DWI enforcement for July 4th holiday

Jun. 26, 2023

The Garland PD will step up Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) patrols starting Friday, June 23 for the July 4th holiday. GPD’s extra patrols will run through Sunday, July 9.

The increased DWI patrols are for an Impaired Driver Mobilization (IDM) project. This project is funded through a TXDOT grant program that targets DWI and Driving Under the Influence (DUI) by Minors.

The patrols will be active in the nighttime hours and utilize both marked and unmarked police cars.

Garland PD officers will apply for blood search warrants for those drivers who refuse to consent to give a specimen of their breath or blood when arrested for DWI-related offenses.

Convicted first-time DWI offenders can:

Pay a fine up to $2,000 – Lose their driver’s license for up to a year – And serve 180 days in jail.

You could face child endangerment charges for driving drunk with a child passenger under 15 and be additionally fined up to $10,000, face up to two years in jail and lose your driver’s license for another 180 days.

You drink. You drive. You lose!  #BeSafeDriveSmart.
