Latino history experts to speak at nonprofit’s annual meeting

“The Mexican American Experience: Telling Our Story in Our Own Words” is the topic of Alex Martinez and Gus Hinojosa on Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Annual Meeting of the nonprofit Friends of Garland’s Historic Magic 11th Street. latinoThe two, well-versed in area Latino history and officers in HOGAR de Dallas, will talk about various sites and individuals in the Dallas area that are important to Latino history here, particularly under-recognized and little-known aspects. They will share information about the movement currently under way in Dallas to form a one-of-a-kind, permanent museum, the Mexican American Museum of Texas, telling the Texas Mexican American experience to enrich future generations from a Mexican American perspective.

The Annual Meeting will be from 1-2 p.m. at the Granger Recreation Center, 1310 West Avenue F, situated in Garland’s Central Park.

Friends of Garland’s Historic Magic 11th Street is a nonprofit charitable organization that works for the betterment of Garland through historic preservation, community development and improvement of Garland’s 11th Street as well as the wider downtown area. A secondary purpose is to recognize under-recognized individuals and sites that are part of Garland’s history.

HOGAR stands for Hispanic Organization for Genealogy and Research, a 25-year-old organization devoted to helping Latino individuals tie into their Hispanic heritage, particularly through research. Alex is president and Gus is vice-president. The group meets quarterly throughout the year.
