Garland’s Music Made Here Concert Series will feature Gary P. Nunn, a Texas music legend, at 7 p.m. Friday, March 1. This outdoor concert is FREE!
Nunn has been writing and performing his own brand of Texas country music since the 1970s and continues to be a well-respected part of the genre. During 40+ years in the industry, Nunn has written songs that have become hits both for him, as well as others. Jerry Jeff Walker’s iconic album, “Viva Terlingua,” features “London Homesick Blues,” possibly the most recognized of Nunn’s songs. It continues, after four decades, to bring crowds to their feet at Nunn’s concerts.
If you do not recognize the song by its name, you will surely recognize the chorus, “I wanna go home with the Armadillo.” It’s also recognizable because it was the theme song for the popular PBS show Austin City Limits for more than 30 years.
Nunn is a singer/songwriter, record label owner, publishing and production company owner and acts as his own manager.
He is one of the pioneers of the Austin music scene and has worked with the likes of Willie Nelson, Michael Martin Murphey and others. His song, “The Last Thing I Needed the First Thing This Morning,” was recorded by Nelson in the 1980s and more recently by Chris Stapleton.
Another of his popular songs, “What I Like About Texas” has become a Texas standard and is one of the writer’s favorite creations. Nunn grew up in Oklahoma, but his love and pride for Texas come through in many of his songs.
Nunn told WFAA television in a 2019 interview that he would be retiring at the end of 2020. Yet here he is, on his way to Garland to share his songs!
Guthrie Kennard will open for Nunn at 7 p.m. Friday, March 1 on the downtown Garland square.
