Beginning Friday, Aug. 16, through Monday, Sept. 2, the Garland Police Department stepped up patrols to combat impaired driving during the Labor Day Holiday. This is a part of the Impaired Driver Mobilization (IDM) project funded by TXDOT, targeting Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) and Driving Under the Influence (DUI) by minors.
Details:
• Dates – Aug. 16 – Sept. 2
• Focus – Evening and nighttime patrols
• Vehicles – Marked and unmarked police cars
Why It Matters:
Drunk driving is a critical issue in Texas. In 2023, there were over 26,000 alcohol-related crashes, resulting in more than 1100 fatalities and thousands of injuries. Garland police are committed to reducing these tragedies by increasing patrols during this holiday period.
Consequences of a DWI Conviction:
• Penalties – First-time offenders face fines, license suspension for up to a year and up to 180 days in jail.
• Financial Impact – Costs can exceed $17,000, including bail, legal fees, court costs, mandatory classes and increased insurance premiums.
Safety Reminder:
The Garland Police Department urges everyone to plan ahead. Use a designated driver, rideshare or public transportation. The message is simple: “Drink, Drive, Go to Jail.” This effort is part of the broader #EndTheStreakTX campaign to stop the daily fatalities on Texas roads.
Call to Action:
Celebrate responsibly and keep our roads safe. For updates on the enforcement campaign, follow the Garland Police Department on social media or visit their website.
Stay safe, plan your ride and enjoy a memorable Labor Day Holiday!
