PLAY & LEARN

Session 1: Sept 1-Oct 5 and Session 2: Oct 13 to Nov 23

Families participate in Play & Learn, where children ages 0 to 5 and their caregivers enjoy an assortment of toys, games and activities that foster imagination, creativity and problem-solving.

MOTOR PLAY – 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 13 – This Play & Learn focuses on developing motor skills.

PLAY-DOH® WEEK – Monday – Friday, Sept. 16 – 20 – 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 20 – Celebrating National Play-Doh® Day Week! Join during Play & Learn for hands-on learning.

Families

MAKE PIÑATAS11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 12 – Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with piñatas! Families invited to create piñatas to take home. Candy/snacks from Latin countries available for sampling.

STUFFIE STORYBOOKS WITH CHAT GPT10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21- Take home your own Stuffie Storybook! Use a questionnaire and Chat GPT to create a personalized stuffie story. Receive your bound storybook and have your little one illustrate their story. Registration is required and begins Sept. 7.

Teens (Ages 13-17)

TEEN ADVISORY BOARD (TAB) – 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18 – Earn volunteer hours for graduation.

Makerspace (Adults and Teens 13+)

The makerspace at Library Express provides access to 3D printers, a Cricut cutter, a laser cutter and soldering irons. When an introductory course is finished, patrons may use the machines during open lab hours or attend a master class.

INTRODUCTORY MAKER CLASSES – Learn about Central Express’s makerspace and develop techniques using machines! These skills include laser cutting, 3D and 2D design, 3D printing, vinyl cutting (Cricut), soldering and more. Taking an intro class on a machine and use that machine during open lab.

INTRO TO 3D PRINTING – 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14 – Registration required. Begins one week before event.

INTRO TO THE CRICUT MACHINE – 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10 – Registration required. Begins one week before event.

MAKERSPACE OPEN LAB – Noon-1:30 p.m. Saturdays, Sept. 7 and 14 – Ages 13+ may use the Central Library Express makerspace tools and resources. Craft supplies will be available. Intro makerspace classes is required to use some of the tools during the open lab. Space is limited.

MAKERSPACE MASTER CLASSES – 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24 – Challenge maker skills by joining a makerspace master class! Patrons will use the skills that they have previously learned in intro maker classes to work on higher level maker projects. Open to adults 18+. Registration required. Begins one week before class.

Adult Programs (Ages 18+)

BOOK CLUB  – GRAPHIC NOVEL BOOK CLUB (ages 16+) – 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17 – “Jujutsu Kaisen, Volume One” by Gege Akuami

ENTERTAINMENT – GAME NIGHT-ADULTS – 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5 – 18+ invited to play games. Board games and cards provided; participants may bring their own games. Refreshments. Space limited.

CRAFTS

STAMP MAKING – 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4 – Make your own stamps! Create your own stamp using the Glowforge machine and guidance from staff. Registration required. Begins one week before class.

CROCHET CORNER IN-PERSON – 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11 – All skill levels welcome! Make a creation from the Crochet Corner display. Basic guidance and some supplies available. Bring your own if possible. The patterns will call for a 3.5 mm – 4 mm hook (E/F/G) and DK or worsted weight yarn.

CACTUS PAINTING – 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25 – Create a masterpiece with a cactus! We will provide the materials to create a painting inspired by samples of cactus paintings. Registration required. Begins one week before event.

EDUCATIONAL

THE POWER OF PROMPTING WITH CHAT GPT AND DALL-E BLOOPERS – 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16 – Learn to better prompt Chat GPT and Dall-E! Explore the dos and don’ts of a well-crafted prompt through real-time examples and bloopers.

ADULT WALKING GROUP* – 9 a.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 18 – Nov. 6 – *Excludes Oct. 9 – Start at the Central Library Express for adults-only walking group! We will take a 25- to 40-minute walk in downtown Garland area and explore the health benefits that a regular walking program can offer. All levels welcome.

FAMILY PLACE PLAYTIME WORKSHOP (AGES 1-3) – 2:15 p.m. Thursdays, Sept. 12 – Oct. 10

Ages 1–3 and caregivers enjoy playtime with toys, books and exploratory activities. Talk to professionals who specialize in early childhood development. Registration required. Begins one week before event.

Families

A GRAND ICE CREAM PARTY – 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7 – Celebrate Grandparent’s Day with an ice cream party! Children and grandparents can enjoy ice cream sundaes, make a craft and play games. If your grandparents cannot attend, bring another special person. Ice cream available while supplies last.

HOMESCHOOL LIBRATORY – Explore hands-on STEAM activities and a book club with fellow homeschoolers! Share discoveries, book reads, more. Families considering homeschooling are welcome.

DECLUTTERING BEST PRACTICES – 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7 – Since Marie Kondo published her book, “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up,” decluttering has become a significant lifestyle trend. Learn the basics of decluttering from Hayli Thorpe, founder of Mindful Tidying with Hayli.
