Southgate STEM Elementary, the only Nationally Certified STEM Campus in Garland ISD, is setting an unmatched standard in innovative learning with its Tinker Studio and library, affectionately known as the “Gator Swamp.”
In Southgate STEM Elementary’s bustling Tinker Studio, students are busy creating colorful piñatas and 3D-printed models, bringing their wildest ideas to life. This energy fuels the only Nationally Certified STEM Campus in Garland ISD, setting an unmatched standard for innovative learning.
Principal Jairo Casco is enthusiastic about the impact these creative spaces have on students, noting that they align perfectly with the school’s mission to foster diverse skill sets.
“These are spaces for students to create, collaborate, and develop skills beyond their regular classroom experiences. It allows us to engage all of our students,” Casco shared.
The Tinker Studio is a vibrant hub of activity where students dive into hands-on projects like 3D printing, circuits, construction, sewing, and more—all tied to their curriculum. Recently, students had the opportunity to create tiny piñatas, a project that required them to use their creativity and bring their ideas to life.
“I love making piñatas! It’s fun to use different colors and shapes. I can make it look how I want, and it feels good to create something unique,” shared fourth grader Zariyah Venson.
While the Tinker Studio buzzes with hands-on creativity, just a few steps away, the Gator Swamp library offers another kind of exploration with its flexible, student-friendly design and unique classification system. Sarah LeFan, the librarian who oversees both the Tinker Studio and the Gator Swamp, emphasized the importance of balancing curriculum connection with student creativity.
“We want to stay curriculum connected, but then we also want them to have the freedom to explore and create things they’re passionate about,” LeFan explained.
The studio integrates arts, construction, and fiber crafts, allowing students to stretch their imaginations and develop new skills year-round. Meanwhile, the Gator Swamp library stands out as a dynamic flex space. Together, these areas inspire students to strengthen their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
“It’s exciting to see kids, and even teachers, excited about learning in this space. They want to be here and ask when they can return,” Casco remarked.
The Tinker Studio and Gator Swamp serve not only as creative outlets for students but also for teachers.
“One of our goals is for the adults to use this space, too,” said Casco. “When the adults are involved, the kids get even more motivated. It’s all about creating a space where everyone feels welcome and inspired.”
Another fourth grader, Lucas Boviall, said, “I like it when my teachers come in here! It makes me want to learn more.”
As the school expands its Tinker Studio and library spaces, it remains committed to nurturing creativity and collaboration for students and teachers. With endless possibilities ahead, Southgate STEM Elementary is unmatched in creating the next generation of innovators and thinkers.
