The Garland Library System has announced a great schedule of activities for November. Take a look and make plans to attend them!

PLAY & LEARN – Session 2: Oct. 13 – Nov. 23 – 10 a.m. Fridays – Families can participate in Play & Learn, an event where children 0 to 5 and their caregivers can enjoy an assortment of toys, games and activities that foster imagination, creativity and problem-solving.

Teens (Ages 13-17)

TEEN ADVISORY BOARD (TAB) – 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20 – Earn volunteer hours for graduation, help plan teen events at the library!

Makerspace (Adults and Teens 13+)

The makerspace at the Central Library Express provides access to maker machines such as 3D printers, a Cricut cutter, a laser cutter and soldering irons. Once an introductory course is taken, patrons may use the machines during our Open Lab hours or attend one of our master classes!

MAKERSPACE INTRO CLASSES

INTRODUCTORY MAKER CLASSES – Develop maker techniques using our machines! Skills include laser cutting, 3D and 2D design, 3D printing, vinyl cutting (Cricut), soldering and more. Taking an intro class on a machine will let you use that machine during any Open Lab. Registration is required and begins one week before the event.

INTRO TO LASER CUTTING – 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 23

MAKERSPACE OPEN LAB – Noon-1:30 p.m. Saturdays, Nov. 16 and 23 – 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18 & 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21 – Adults and teens 13+ are welcome to use the Central Library Express’s makerspace tools and resources. A variety of craft supplies will be available to create with. Intro makerspace classes are required in order to use some of the tools during the Open Lab portion. Space is limited.

MAKERSPACE MASTER CLASSES 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12 – Soldering – Join a makerspace master class! Patrons will use the skills that they have previously learned during intro maker classes to work on higher level maker projects. Open to adults 18+. Must have taken corresponding intro maker class. Registration is required and begins one week before the class.

BOOK CLUB GRAPHIC NOVEL (Ages 16+) – 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19 – “Apothecary Diaries, Volume 1” Hyuga Natsu

ENTERTAINMENT

GAME NIGHT FOR ADULTS – 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7 – Adults 18+ invited! The library will provide board games and card games; participants are welcome to bring their own games. Light refreshments provided. Space is limited.

CROCHET CORNER IN-PERSON – 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13 – Crafters of all skill levels welcome at Crochet Corner! We will make a creation from the monthly Crochet Corner display together. Basic guidance and some supplies available but limited. Participants are encouraged to bring their own supplies. The patterns will call for a 3.5mm – 4 mm hook (E/F/G) and DK or worsted weight yarn.

PAINT LIKE RICK BARTOW (AGES 21+) 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8 – Create your own masterpiece based on the work of celebrated Native American artist Rick Bartow in this unique paint and sip program co-sponsored by the Garland Downtown Business Association and Friends of the Library. Learn about Bartow’s unique style and enjoy wine as well as refreshments inspired by Native American cuisine. For adults 21 and older. Participants wishing to sip and paint must be prepared to show ID. Registration is required and begins one week prior to the event.

GARDENING CRAFT CLASS: PUMPKINS WITH PIZZAZZ 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16 – Learn how to create a beautiful fall centerpiece for yourself or to give as a gift! Learn step-by-step how to create succulent pumpkins from master gardener Roseann Ferguson. Succulent-decorated pumpkins are easy to create and will last for months. Registration is required. Begins one week before the event.

WATERCOLOR CLASS 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23 – Learn basics of water coloring! Supplies provided. Utilize techniques to create watercolor backgrounds and pressed flowers for foregrounds. Registration is required, begins one week before the event.

EDUCATIONAL / PROGRAMAS EDUCATIVOS – NANOWRIMO WRITE-IN AFTER HOURS

6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1 – Aspiring novelists can kick off National Novel Writing Month with a write-in program! Silence your inner editor and get words on the page to write the novel you’ve always dreamed about. Participants can bring their own laptops or devices or borrow one from the library kiosk or write with pen and paper. Prizes will be awarded to writer with the most words written by end of the evening.

ESCAPE FROM THE LAND OF OZ ESCAPE ROOM 10 a.m.- 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23 – Try your luck at completing our newest escape room by solving puzzles and riddles before time runs out. Children under 10 must be with an adult. Teams of 2-8 people will have 15 minutes to save Oz. Registration required. Begins one week before the event.

Young Audiences (Ages 6-12)

CANVAS & COOKIES: ROBOTS – 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16 – Follow step-by-step directions on how to paint your very own robot design on canvas while enjoying some delicious cookies! Participants are encouraged to wear paint-friendly clothing.

Tweens/Teens (Ages 10-17)

DIY RECYCLED BOOK DIORAMAS (AGES 10-17)2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9 – Create and build a diorama scene that is cozy, creepy, colorful or whatever you dream up! Supplies will be provided and snacks will be served. Registration is required. Begins one week before the event.

Young Audiences (Ages 6-12)

ORIGAMI CLUB – 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7 – Origami enthusiasts of all skill levels are invited to join us! Beginner folders will learn a new fold and advanced folders may freestyle.

STEAM LAB: SQUISHY CIRCUITS – 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9 – Explore conductivity in circuit systems! We will use special dough to make squishy circuit systems.

Tweens/Teens (Ages 10-17)

TEEN ADVISORY BOARD – 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12 – Join TAB to help plan teen programs, develop leadership skills, earn volunteer hours and meet other teens who love the library. Teens applying for board membership will need a guardian’s permission.

CHESS CLUB (AGES 6-17) – 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23 – Join a quick chess lesson before testing your skills in a match.
