Altrusa celebrates 20 years of service

Sep. 19, 2022

Altrusa International of Garland recently celebrated its 20th birthday with good food, lots of fun and a look back.

The first international president of Altrusa, Mamie L. Bass, published a list of principles in 1921. Those principles have withstood the test of time and are as appropriate now as they were 101 years ago. A few include:

  • Altrusa is committed to the philosophy of unselfishness, the joy of giving rather than getting, and to the search for that happiness which is based upon spiritual worthiness.
  • Altrusa is practical idealism. Its service consists, not in saying great things, but in daily earnest practice of its principles.
  • Altrusa develops true leadership, concerned with accomplishment and not with recognition.
  • Altrusa believes it is not enough to be good; Altrusans must be good for something. Each member must be doing the piece of work that is hers in a way that puts her in the front ranks of accomplishment.

The members of Altrusa of Garland exemplify these principles and have impacted the lives of countless individuals through their programs. Each member tirelessly serves the community in a variety of ways. Some of the group’s past and present programs include:altrusa
