Altrusa International of Garland was proud to host the international medical service organization Mercy Ships at its April business meeting. Carolyn Kettenacker introduced Altrusans to this charity medical service that provides surgery, medical and dental care, orthopedic care and more to impoverished people around the world. The organization utilizes ships to deliver a state-of-the-art hospital to regions of the world where water, electricity, medical facilities and personnel is limited or non-existent.
Because more than 50 percent of the world’s population lives within 100 miles of the coast, Mercy Ships can reach more people who need care. Kettenacker shared videos and photos of the ship, medical staff, doctors, nurses and ship personnel who donate their time and medical expertise to serve others.
Altrusa International of Garland is a civic organization focusing on the needs of Garland. The organization’s purpose is to serve others through service projects and fundraising efforts tailored for the Garland community. Partnering with service organizations and citizens of Garland allows Altrusa’s members to tailor activities that help raise awareness to community issues like homelessness, hunger, poverty, literacy and many others.
Mercy Ships is currently serving on the western coast of Africa, primarily in Senegal, Guinea and other coastal areas. They serve the poorest countries in the world according to the United Nations Human Development Index (UNHDI). By providing medical and dental resources to these areas, Mercy Ships is able to help communities improve their quality of life, bring hope and healing to people who have no options for healthcare.
