Altrusa presents check to Good Sams

Mar. 10, 2016

Altrusa Garland recently received a $500 grant from the Foundation Disaster Relief Support Program to benefit Good Samaritans of Garland. A disaster relief communication alert was then sent to the Foundation Liaisons across the United States and an additional $350 was contributed from various clubs.

The grant was provided to help with the recovery process made necessary by the destruction left in the wake of the 12 tornadoes that hit the North Texas area. The devastating storms that hit on the evening of Dec. 26, 2015, eventually killed 12 people, left many people homeless, damaged hundreds of homes and left thousands of people without power.

Based near the destruction and with an established process in place, Good Samaritans was one of the first relief groups on the scene to support the tornado victims. The organization is a locally-based, independent nonprofit agency that provides food and utility assistance to qualifying families and individuals living in Garland or the Garland Independent School District area. Clients can receive frozen meat, dairy, dry goods and fresh produce.

Good Samaritans representatives tirelessly went house to house with boxes of food and gift cards to help victims purchase the staple items not available through the agency. Many of the victims have moved to temporary housing and will need continual support during the rebuilding process. The agency is also working with the Garland Independent School District liaison to support families affected by the storms.

About Altrusa: We make our communities better through leadership, partnership and service.  That is our goal. Founded in 1917, Altrusa is relevant to many civic-minded people who are interested in creating better communities. Last year, Altrusans proudly gave over a million volunteer hours around the world, including clubs in the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, England, Bermuda, Ireland, India, Scotland, New Zealand and Russia.
