Apply to serve on boards, commissions

Jun. 19, 2016

Garland residents are encouraged to help carry out the many functions of city government by applying to serve on Garland’s Advisory Boards and Commissions. All applicants and incumbents must submit a Board and Commission Application form by Friday, July 15.

Applications may be turned in to the City Secretary’s office at 200 North Fifth Street, or submitted via email to CVanover@GarlandTx.gov. Applicants will be notified of acceptance by mail after their appointment.

Board members are selected for two-year terms by the City Council. Applicants may apply to serve on the board of their choice; however, certain boards require specific technical skills as noted by ordinance. Because board or commission positions may become open during the year, all applications are kept on file for one year.

Qualifications to serve on boards and commissions include:

The Garland Charter and Code of Ordinances establish certain qualifications that must be met by members of boards and commissions. In addition to special qualifications for service, a board member must:

  • have been a resident of the state of Texas for one year and of the city of Garland for six months before the date of appointment;
  • be a qualified voter at time of appointment;
  • not be in arrears on city taxes, utility service charges or other obligations owed the city;
  • have not been convicted of a felony;
  • have not been convicted of a Class A misdemeanor;
  • not be an adversary party to pending litigation against the city.

All board and commission members also must file a Code of Ethics Disclosure Form with the City Secretary.

Download an application and see a complete list of available boards and commissions on the City Secretary webpage at GarlandTx.gov. For questions and additional information, call 972-205-2404.
