The Garland City Council celebrated the completion of renovations at Audubon Recreation Center, 342 West Oates Road. The facility was reopened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday, Oct. 5.
Audubon is back. And it’s better than ever.
“This one has the wow factor,” City Manager Bryan Bradford said. “This one is done right.”
Through voter-approved bond programs, $6.1 million has been spent to expand and renovate the facility. The project added approximately 5,000 square feet to the recreation center. Improvements were made to the interior layout, along with extensive renovations.
Improvements included a fitness room and expansion of the multipurpose areas. In addition, a Lu projector gaming system has been added to the gym for interactive play.
“It’s the largest fitness room in the Garland system. It’s even got a covered patio area and lawn area out back that you can reserve for family and group activities,” said Council Member B.J. Williams, who represents District 4, home of the rec center and a surrounding park.
It includes trails, a play area, disc golf, softball and soccer fields, and the Surf & Swim wave pool.
Audubon Recreation Center was built in 1980 and was last renovated in 2003. Classes and programs at Audubon can be found on the city’s PLAY Guide.
“This recreation center has been here a long time and served a countless number of people,” Mayor Scott LeMay said. “Now it will serve countless others for many years to come.”
