Camp kicks off ahead of marching season

Aug. 10, 2024

Summer band camp is in full swing across Garland ISD, and the anticipation for this year’s marching band shows, including Rowlett High School’s “Enlightened,” is reaching new heights. The bands have been working hard since practices began mid-July, braving the early morning summer heat.

“The best part of camp is seeing the kids become a family,” shared Rene Lira, Rowlett High School Director of Bands. “They’re all working hard to help each other, and their attitudes have been great.”

Rowlett’s much-anticipated show is set to bring audiences a fresh and exciting experience this season. This year’s production is unique, spotlighting how light passes through stained glass windows, adding an adventurous and uplifting feel to the show. The stained-glass effect will be prominent throughout the show, camp including in custom-designed band uniforms, backdrops, and props, promising a show like no other.

“The show has a special feel,” said Jackson Nelson, head drum major. “It’s adventurous, uplifting, and hard to describe. It’s just so good.”

Nelson says audiences can expect an electrifying experience with amazing music that’s sure to impress.

“They’re going to love it,” Lira assured. “The music is incredible, and the whole production is designed to wow them.”

The inspiration for “Enlightened” came from a careful process that begins each November, right after the end of the marching season. The band directors explored various ideas and shows, ultimately finding a concept from a specific writer and customizing it to fit their band and vision.

“We want to create excitement,” Lira explained. “The show has big and slow moments, taking the audience on a journey. We want to give them goosebumps.”

Beginning with the first football game, the band will perform small portions of the show as they continue integrating all the elements and working on the four movements. Lira expects the whole show to be ready for the halftime performance by the fifth week of school. The music, arranged by Reed Atkinson and featuring pieces by composers like Eric Whitacre and Beethoven, promises a dynamic musical experience.
