Boy Scouts Duck Creek District hosts awards dinner

The annual Boy Scouts of America Duck Creek District Recognition Dinner was held Friday, Feb. 24 at South Garland Baptist Church. The Duck Creek District includes the entire area of the Garland ISD.

The theme at this year’s event was “Get Back to It!” The 2022 Eagle and Summit Scouts, Outstanding Youth & Unit Scouters, District Award of Merit and Rust Powers Foundation Scholarship recipients were recognized at the event. Additionally, Council Members B.J. Williams, Deborah Morris,scouts Jeff Bass and Dylan Hedrick were on hand to celebrate with the scouts and their families.

The keynote speaker was Curtis Jenkins from the Child Welfare Department, Richardson ISD and founder of the Walk of Kindness Foundation. Although Jenkins was not in the scouting program, he lives his life according to many of the scouts’ principles. He helps others, is friendly, courteous, kind and cheerful. In addition, he follows the scouts’ slogan, “Do a Good Turn Daily.”

Jenkins’ address was a lesson in service to others and the difference that one person can make.

Scouts that were recognized for reaching the Eagle Scout level include:
  • Troop 57 – Collin Wynn Coker, Kenneth Chase Gardner, William Charles Houston, Lucas Ian Lawrence
  • Troop 57 Girls – Amanda Grace Seida, Arden Riley Twiss
  • Troop 100 – Jonathan Ringo Temple Freeborn, Ruben Santiago Gonzales, Ethan Alexander Mixell, Landen Perry White
  • Troop 1020 – Jeremiah Tomas Manual Townsend
  • Troop 1199 – Kaden Nguyen
  • Troop 1199 Girls – Cassidy Kathleen King
  • Troop 1978 – Greyson Jack Baker, Nathaniel Forsythe, Jacob Carl DeWayne Jones
  • Troop 1989 – Roberto Antonio Garza, Jr., Tucker Halliday, William Thiehoff
  • Summit Scout Venturing Crew 1485 – Jonah Wolff

The Rust Powers Foundation awarded three college scholarships. A $1,000 scholarship was presented to William Charles Houston of Troop 57 for this year’s Outstanding Service Project. William transformed an empty plot of ground at East Dallas Christian Church into a performance and outdoor service area by building and installing three benches and a stage.

Two additional scholarships, each for $3000, were awarded to Roberto Garza, Jr. and Kaden Nguyen.

In addition, two individuals, Tevis Diaz and Heather Freeborn, were honored with District Awards of Merit. A special award, the Silver Beaver, is reserved for individuals who go beyond district service and impact the Circle Ten Council on some level. Two individuals, Frank Baum and Linda Hermann received this special recognition.
