Brad Hanson provides encouragement through music

May. 14, 2020

Garland resident Brad Hanson has been the pianist in residence at NorthPark Center for more than 10 years and still calls it his dream job. Playing piano was a natural part of his family and his interest in music began early in his life. He has been playing piano for 27 years.

“I just remember having a lot of fun playing,” he said. “It wasn’t a chore or work; it was pure fun for me. Playing is now an outlet for me, and I hope that others feel more relaxed after hearing my sets.”

With shopping centers closed for several weeks because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and now open with shortened hours, he misses NorthPark Center, it’s atmosphere and energy. He also misses the opportunity to interact with people at the mall but is currently doing the next best thing – live Facebook concerts every Friday and Saturday night at 6 p.m.

music“I have played every weekend at NorthPark Center for so long and it just felt so strange thinking I wouldn’t be playing for that group of people for who knows how long,” Hanson said. “I figured others would be missing NorthPark just as much, so I thought it would be a neat way to connect with them during this crazy time. It’s been great to interact with them and offer some hope and comfort. I just hope it’s been a blessing.”

The online performances have been a help and an encouragement to many while they have sheltered-in-place. This is not only a testament to Hanson’s incredible talent, but also to the power of music.

In addition to being the pianist in residence at NorthPark Center, Hanson teaches piano and guitar to many students including his own children. He considers teaching music a joy and a privilege.

Hanson, his wife Valene and three children moved to Garland six years ago to be close to family.
