Celebrate Build Garland Day Feb. 11

Jan. 31, 2022

Build Garland Day 2022 will be celebrated in a series of public events from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11. City officials will cut the ribbon at Gale Fields Recreation Center at 9 a.m. The action will progress to the formal opening of the Dorfman Park playground, the Transportation Operations & Maintenance Facility, and finally, at 2 p.m., at the Garland Animal Shelter & Adoption Center.

Build Garland Day’s format reflects the quick progress of the record $423.7 million bond program approved by voters in May 2019. The initial event in 2021 consisted mostly of groundbreakings. But the shovels will be left behind at Build Garland Day 2022 in favor of the celebration of completed projects.

Gale Fields, 1701 Dairy Road, is the second recreation center to reopen after enhancements from the bond program. It currently houses most of the City’s senior programs, as the Senior Center in Downtown Garland is now getting its upgrades.

Dorfman Park, highlighted by an inviting wooden lion-shaped climbing structure, is among more than half a dozen playground upgrades that are up and running. In all, 25 playgrounds are being renovated at sites throughout the city.

The Transportation Operations & Maintenance Facility was brought up to all industry standards, with workspace enhanced to better accommodate the signal operations and sign-making processes that keep Garland traffic on the move every day.

The grand finale of Build Garland Day will be the debut of the most anticipated of all the 2019 bond projects, the Garland Animal Shelter & Adoption Center. Join us at 2 p.m. at 1902 State Highway 66 as we celebrate the doubling of capacity and state-of-the-art facilities and care for Garland’s valued four-legged residents.

In case of weather or other need for postponement, the backup date for Build Garland Day is Tuesday, Feb. 15.
