Citizens’ Fire Academy now accepting applications

Aug. 13, 2018

The Garland Fire Department, through the Citizens’ Fire Academy, is proud to provide an opportunity for Garland residents to participate in a program that promotes a greater understanding of the mission, responsibilities and activities of the fire department while serving the community. This is accomplished through education, demonstration and, most importantly, participation.

Class members are given the opportunity to participate in various hands-on operations. Some will be challenging. However, these tasks are strictly voluntary.

Participants will be exposed to the many and varied functions of the GFD in an interesting, informative and rewarding experience.

The next academy begins Sept. 13. This is an eight-week program. Weekly meetings are held Thursdays from 6 to 9:30 p.m. The class culminates with a graduation and “burn day” from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3.

Upon completing this program, attendees will have knowledge of how  the fire department operates and its capabilities. Participants will also be able to create a safer home and work environment. We hope you will take what you have learned into the community by sharing it with your friends and associates, thereby helping to foster a better understanding of the services the the Garland Fire Department provides for the community.

The citizens’ academy application can be found here. Applications are accepted in the order received. Class size is limited and once full, remaining applications will be held for the next class.
