As required by Garland’s City Charter, the City Council recently voted to adjust the district borders. The changes will take effect Jan. 1, 2022.
A comparison was made of the population of each district and the changes are intended to make each district as close as to the others as possible. The difference in the population of each district should not exceed 10%. City staff provided two options, A and B. Links to maps of each option are below. The council voted for Option B.
The City Charter requires that the districts be evaluated every five years and be adjusted so that they will be as nearly equal in population as possible.
The council voted 8-1 to approve the newly divided districts with Rich Aubin, District 5 council member casting the vote against.
Council districts 3 and 4 did not require changes.

AN ORDINANCE AMENDING CHAPTER 10, “ADMINISTRATION,” OF THE CODE OF ORDINANCES OF THE CITY OF GARLAND, TEXAS RELATING TO COUNCIL DISTRICT BOUNDARIES; PROVIDING A SAVINGS CLAUSE, AND A SEVERABILITY CLAUSE; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
