City welcomes Boardr Tournament Series, celebrates renaming of skatepark

Mar. 28, 2024

The largest skatepark in North Texas is welcoming its first national spotlight this spring, starting with The Boardr Skateboarding Tournament Series on Friday, March 29, and Saturday, March 30. Garland’s John Comer Skatepark, 1010 W. Miller Road, welcomes the national all-ages skateboarding contest.

There is no charge to spectators. Events start at 6 p.m. Friday. Practice starts at 8 a.m. and the contest at 10 a.m. Saturday in Street (women’s and three men’s age groups offered, plus open competition). Bowl skating starts at 1:30 p.m.

Tournament schedule is below.

On Saturday, April 27, the city is planning a first-of-its-kind celebration to officially commemorate the renaming of Jon Comer Skatepark. Skaters, spectators, family and friends are invited to a special unveiling ceremony and two skateboarding contests.

Known as the first adaptive skateboarder to break into the mainstream, Jon Comer has left a legacy that has grown into a movement. In his honor, the City is partnering with professional skatepark management operator Action Park Alliance (APA) to bring some of the world’s best adaptive skateboarders to Garland. APA produces the World Championships for Wheelchair Motocross & Adaptive Skateboarding annually, along with the Jon Comer Memorial Skate Jam, which aims to raise funds to support adaptive athletes with travel costs and expenses.

On April 27, Garland’s celebration will kick off at 10 a.m. with the unveiling of new skatepark signage scheduled for 11 a.m. An Adaptive Skateboarding Contest will then rank competing athletes in an ongoing points system structured for Paralympic qualifying. Following its completion, a Best Trick Contest open to any skater in attendance will take place. Competitors of all ages, abilities and disabilities are encouraged to show off their skills for a chance to win exciting and unique prizes.
