Clean cars equals shoes for needy children

Sep. 12, 2018

In an effort to serve children in need at the beginning of the new school year, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Garland participated in a larger Church effort to collect new shoes for a local charity.

Buckner Shoes for Orphan Souls® is the largest humanitarian aid project of Buckner International and provides new shoes and socks to orphans and vulnerable children in the United States and throughout the world. Since 1999, Buckner has distributed more than three million pairs of new shoes and socks to children in 82 countries. Thirty percent of the shoes donated stay within the United States, most times helping the communities in which they were donated.

The youth group from the Garland 3rd Ward organized a car wash and asked for a donation of a new pair of children’s or youth sized shoes in exchange for a cleaned car. Thirty-five pairs of shoes were collected.

The Richardson Texas Stake, which includes the three Garland congregations, collected a total of 128 pairs of sneakers for needy children in the North Texas area.

Garland resident Caren Taylor, the Community Service Specialist for the Stake, delivered the huge boxes of shoes to a grateful Steve Singleton, Logistics Coordinator for Buckner at their Mesquite facility. “They were very appreciative of the donation. The need is great not only around the world, but right here in the Dallas area also.”, Taylor said.
