The Travis College Hill Neighbors will dedicate a new commemorative sign honoring the neighborhood’s resilience. Its 108-year history has seen TWO pandemics, two world wars, the Great Depression, the 1927 Garland tornado and numerous other challenges.
The large sign will be situated on the northeast corner of the property at 11th Street and Avenue B. It will sit in the middle of a new 11th Street (north entrance) Entryway Garden and Monarch Butterfly Waystation. The garden was designed by Reba Collins of Keep Garland Beautiful.
A new Little Free Library will also be stationed in the entry garden with a structure designed by builder Dale Adams. The structure is a replica of the Adams house (a 1915 Craftsman) at 301 South 11th Street.
In addition, the one-hour, safe-spaced dedication will feature a vocal number. The song was composed about an 11th-Street love match that happened during World War II. It will be performed by two actors/soloists from the “Becoming Garland Avenue” movie.
The event is free and open to the public. The dedication of the commemorative sign is at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14,
