COVID updates: Counts, vaccines, funeral assistance

The number of COVID-19 deaths in Garland increased by 49 Monday, April 12, when the city’s health department was notified by the state regarding additional deaths that had not yet been accounted for in city records. The new number below includes these fatalities. Numbers are as of Monday, April 12.

Case counts

City of Garland – case totals

  • Total cases: 27,458 (11.3% of Garland’s population of 242,914)
  • Active cases: 313 (1.1%)
  • Recovered patients: 26,722 (97.3%)
  • Deaths: 423 (1.5%)

State of Texas – case totals

  • Total cases: 2,819,528 – this number includes 1,660 new cases
  • Deaths: 48,219

United States – case totals

  • Total cases: 31,261,993
  • Deaths: 562,501
Vaccines

NOTE: Due to today’s announcement from the CDC and FDA regarding the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, Garland’s health department canceled Tuesday (April 13) afternoon’s mass vaccination event at HBH Stadium. 

However, those who were scheduled to receive their second Moderna dose at the stadium Tuesday morning received their vaccines as scheduled.

People 60 or older can get vaccines at the Garland Public Health Clinic, 206 Carver Drive, without an appointment. Walk-ins are welcome Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday – 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

If you are medically unable to get to the clinic or a vaccination event, call the Garland Health Department at 972-205-3900 to make alternative arrangements.

Funeral assistance

An assistance program is in place to help with funeral costs of deaths related to COVID-19. FEMA will pay up to $9,000 for each funeral or up to $35,500 for multiple funerals. Covered expenses include caskets, plots, cremation, urns and officiants’ costs.

FEMA warns that they are experiencing high call volume. Therefore, they ask that people needing help try again later if they get a busy signal or if call doesn’t go through. There is no deadline to apply.
