Disposal of household hazardous waste

May. 16, 2016

Common household hazardous waste includes: aerosol sprays, ammonia, auto fluids, batteries, computers, detergent, drain cleaners, glues, household cleaners, lighter fluid, paints, pesticides, pool chemicals, spot removers, varnish, wood sealers, and most other chemicals used in the home.

What should you do with these products?

Keep products in their original containers with original labels

Store in a cool, dry place

Keep products out of reach from children and pets

Secure lids tightly

Always use products as directed on the label

Never pour these products on the ground, driveway, street, or in a storm drain. Improper disposal sends the waste down the street into a storm drain, which leads to our local waterways. Not only is this illegal, but it is harmful to the environment. To report any illegal discharges to the storm drain, call the Stormwater Hotline at 972-205-2180.

When it is time to clean out your home, all hazardous products should be taken to the Dallas County Home Chemical Collection Center, a free service to the public. Take an electricity bill stub or driver’s license to prove
