On Friday, March 13, near midnight, the Garland Police Department received a 911 call from a residence in the 1900 block of Vail Drive reporting a disturbance involving a gun.
Garland police officers responded and attempted to communicate with individuals that could be heard inside of the garage. While attempting to communicate with people in the garage, officers heard multiple rounds being fired inside the garage and at the officers through the garage door.
After shots were fired, officers observed three individuals fleeing from the house and learned a 7-year-old child was still trapped inside of the house, sleeping in a front bedroom. Fearing for the safety of the child, SWAT officers entered the house in an attempt to safely rescue the child.
During the rescue attempt, the suspect confronted the officers with a pistol. One of the SWAT officers, a 5-year veteran of the Garland Police Department, discharged his weapon striking the subject.
Garland medics were on scene and provided immediate medical aid. The subject was pronounced deceased at the scene. The subject was determined to be armed with two pistols.
A search was conducted of the house and the child was found unharmed in the bedroom.
The subject was identified as Dung Nguyen, 50, of Murphy.
Garland detectives, along with members of the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office Public Integrity Unit, responded to the scene to investigate according to standard procedures.
The officer will be placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with departmental policy.
The investigation is ongoing.
