Dogs, owners enjoy dog park

Aug. 27, 2020

Garland dog owners had a bit of a wait, but they are now enjoying a great facility where they can let their dogs have some time off-leash. While your dog is having fun at the dog park, there is some basic etiquette that should be followed in addition to following all posted rules.

Health/Safety

  • Dog owners should veterinarian to ensure that your dog is up-to-date on all vaccinations as well as flea, tick and parasite control medications. This protects your dog as well as other dogs at the park.
  • Don’t take your dog to the park if there is any indication that it might be ill.
  • Water bowls at dog parks carry the risk of disease so bring a portable bowl for your dog.
  • Do not take unsterilized dogs to the park.
  • To help protect against the spread of parasites, dog owners must pick up your dog’s poop.
  • For their safety, keep small dogs in the designated small-dog area.
  • Never let your dog act aggressively with another dog. Intervene if play starts to get rough.
  • Don’t bring a hyper dog to the park as it can cause other dogs to feel threatened. If your dog is excitable, take it for a walk or play fetch in the backyard before going to the dog park.
  • Keep the leash on your dog until you reach the designated off-leash area.
  • Don’t get between fighting dogs. This is a good way to get bitten or injured. The dog could also see you as a threat and redirect his aggression toward you. Instead of jumping in between two fighting dogs, use other tactics to break up the fight. Try throwing a sweatshirt or jacket on the dogs or if possible, give them a treat or make commands in a loud, stern voice.
  • Don’t take young children, toddlers or babies to the dog park. Kids’ small size and lack of experience with dogs can cause a dangerous situation for both the child and the dog.

Be a responsible, courteous owner

  • Don’t take a puppy less than four months old or a female dog in heat to the dog park.
  • Dogs require direct supervision when they’re in the park, so stop texting, talking on the phone or reading and give your pet your full attention.
  • Teach your dog good manners. Try the AKC Training DVD if you need help.
  • Do not take toys to the park.
  • Do not take food or glass containers to the park.
  • If you want to pet a dog that is not yours, ask the owner. Also, ask if you want your dog to play with their dog. The person or the dog might not want to interact. Always respect that.
