Don’t miss 2020 Trout Lily Walk

Feb. 11, 2020

Make plans now to attend the Spring Creek Forest Preserve’s Trout Lily Walk. This year marks the 27th anniversary of the annual Trout Lily Walk.

Sunday, Feb. 23 – 27th Trout Lily Walk at 1770 Holford Road – Any time from 2 p.m. – 3 p.m.Tom Frey, a regionally acclaimed naturalist will be with attendees on the walk and he always has new information about the preserve and its ecology. The tiny flowers are only in bloom from about mid-February through mid-March. Then, they disappear until next year.

Upon arrival, volunteers at the pavilion will welcome participants with introductory information then send them along the clearly marked trail to the Trout lily field. Tom Frey, advisor, mentor and friend will be at the Trout lily field. After viewing the lilies, visitors will walk along to the next marked spot, where another knowledgeable naturalist talk about the significance of that area of the preserve. The volunteer naturalists will be at several stations along the trail until the last walkers go through.

This format allows folks to go at their own pace rather than having to follow a group; no one gets impatient waiting for others to catch up and each can spend as much time at a station as they want.

There are also some great events coming up in March.

Saturday, March 7, 2020 – Monthly work session at 1787 Holford – notice change in location. Work session is from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.

  • Time will be used to pull out all remaining invasive plants. Sounds ambitious, but because of lots of volunteer work, the prairie and forest at 1887 is already almost cleared. Just need to keep on top of it and clear what is left or recently emerged.
  • For Master Naturalists, this counts as Volunteer Hours on the Preservation Society for Spring Creek Forest project.
  • Safety Materials: BRING WATER. Wear work gloves, long pants, protective eyewear and sturdy shoes (no sandals) for protection from poison ivy and thorns.  If you have them, bring loppers and/or small tree saws.
  • All participants and parents of minors must sign our Liability Waiver.  All minors 16 yrs. and younger must be accompanied by an adult.

Sunday, March 22 – 4th Sunday Nature Walk – fun, family walks for all who want to enjoy a guided walk in the preserve. Tentative subject is the regional climate of flood and drought and how it impacts the creek, forest and prairie. Location will be announced. Walk begins at 2 p.m. and goes to around 3 p.m.

  • All trails are not stroller-compatible; must be able to walk approximately a mile.
  • Long pants and sturdy shoes (no sandals) for protection from poison ivy and thorns.
  • Apply insect repellent.
  • Bring water.
  • All participants and the parents of minors must sign our Liability Waiver.  All minors 16 yrs. and younger must be accompanied by an adult.
