Garland’s Duck Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant recently received the George W. Burke, Jr. Facility Safety Award at the 2022 Texas Water Awards Program ceremony in San Antonio. The award is presented by the Water Environment Federation and recognizes municipal and industrial wastewater facilities for active and effective safety programs. The treatment plant won the award in 2018 and 2021 as well.
The Duck Creek Treatment Plant is one of two water resource recovery facilities operated and located in Garland. It has a 40 million gallon per day permitted annual average daily flow, which it receives from the west side of Garland and from portions of Dallas, Richardson and Sunnyvale.
The treatment plant is a 24/7, 365 days a year operation. Since 2019, it has maintained a perfect safety record — 980 days without a lost time accident. The plant’s record is 1,755 days.
In 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017, the plant won the Gold Award from the National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA) and is expected to receive the Gold Award again for 2021. In 2018 and 2019, the plant won the Platinum Award from NACWA for 100% compliance. In 2020, the plant won the NACWA Silver Award.
