DWI stats for spring break announced

Mar. 24, 2021

Thirty-six arrests were made and 41 citations were issued during the spring break holiday increased Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) enforcement period.

The Garland Police Department stepped up Driving While Intoxicated patrols from Friday, March 5, through Sunday, March 21, in an effort to keep Garland citizens and visitors safe during spring break.

During the enforcement period, Garland’s regular patrols made 33 DWI arrests. The additional enforcement for the same 17-day period resulted in three additional DWI arrests and one other arrest for unrelated offenses.

The additional enforcement was paid for by a state-funded grant from TxDot, known as the Impaired Driving Mobilization Grant (IDM).

The Garland Police Department would like to thank TxDOT for their assistance in allowing officers to keep the city streets safe during the spring break holiday.

About IDM: Impaired Driving Mobilization (IDM) provides grant money for local law enforcement agencies to conduct driving while intoxicated (DWI) enforcement Waves and increase DWI arrests as part of the statewide “Drink. Drive. Go to Jail” program, held in conjunction with the national Impaired Driving Mobilization (IDM) campaign. IDM grants require a 20% minimum matching share from the subgrantee.

TRF-BTS identifies areas of the state with the highest percentages of alcohol related crashes and then invites law enforcement agencies in these areas to participate in the IDM. These projects conduct quarterly enforcement mobilizations during pre-determined holiday periods.
