Eight families left homeless after apartment fire

Jul. 15, 2015

An early morning fire Wednesday, July 15 at the Forest Glen Apartment complex, located near the corner of Jupiter Road and Forest Lane, left eight families homeless. No residents were injured but several family pets were lost.

The two-alarm fire was reported at around 1:30 a.m. and, according to Roberto and Maria Hernandez, quickly spread from the first floor to the second then caused the roof to cave in. They lost everything, but were just grateful that they were able to get their three children and themselves out in time.

The humidity caused manpower problems for Garland Fire Department personnel and they were assisted by firefighters from Richardson and Dallas. This enabled personnel to be rotated out to cool down and rehydrate.

The Red Cross is assisting the residents of the eight destroyed units, but as of Wednesday at 9 p.m., the Hernandez family did not know where they were going to sleep. They said that the apartment complex property managers had made a unit available to them but it had not been cleaned and they could not stay there.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
