New environmental compliance focus targets commercial, industrial properties

Oct. 1, 2024

The city of Garland’s Health Department now has two divisions: Environmental Health and Environmental Compliance. Amber Thompson, most recently the city’s health manager, has been named director of Environmental Compliance, effective Sept. 16.

Under Thompson’s leadership, Environmental Compliance will focus on proactive education, inspections, and enforcement for commercial and industrial properties, in addition to responding to complaints.

Thompson has more than 13 years of experience in the health industry, including 11 years working for the cities of Garland and Plano, as well as in the private sector as a health inspector and health supervisor. She earned her bachelor’s degree in chemistry at the University of Texas at Dallas. In December, Thompson will graduate from Texas A&M University School of Law with a Master of Legal Studies in Energy, Environment and Natural Resources Law.

Mandy Pippen will continue as Director of Environmental Health, which handles the inspections of restaurants, pools, certain violations of noise ordinance and more.
