Fine Arts students receive All-State honors

Mar. 31, 2018

Eleven Garland ISD fine arts students have earned the highest honor a Texas music student can receive. They were each named to one of 15 All-State bands, choirs and orchestras.

Every year, more than 60,000 students around the state audition for an All-State title. This competitive process, hosted by the Texas Music Educators Association, begins at the regional level with musicians performing for a panel of judges. The highest-ranking students then advance to the area round, and less than 2,000 are eventually chosen for an All-State group. These 15 ensembles perform at the annual TMEA conference each February. Students also receive the opportunity to rehearse with nationally recognized conductors and perform in front of thousands of attendees.

GISD’s 2018 honorees hail from Garland, Rowlett and Sachse high schools. They include:

  • Harrison Bowling, Garland High School – All-State Tenor-Bass Choir
  • Trinity Del Regno, Garland High School – All-State Treble Choir, second year
  • Alaina Galt, Sachse High School – All-State Mixed Choir, second year
  • Ross Gerberich, Rowlett High School – All-State Jazz Band, second year
  • Lauren Grecu, Sachse High School – All-State Treble Choir
  • Chris Ivey, Rowlett High School – All-State Tenor-Bass Choir
  • Keaton McGill, Rowlett High School – All-State Symphonic Band, second year
  • Analyse Melendez, Garland High School – All-State Mixed Choir
  • Nikita Place, Sachse High School – All-State Treble Choir
  • Tony Sal, Garland High School – All-State Tenor-Bass Choir
  • Karen Wemhoener, Garland High School – All-State Mixed Choir, fourth year

The Board of Trustees recognized these students for their musical accomplishments at the Feb. 27 board meeting.

“We want to also thank the school directors who have helped these students achieve their milestones, as well as the parents who have supported these students in all of their efforts,” said GISD’s Director of Visual and Performing Arts George Jones.
